Two years of Modi has hit secular values: Yechury

New Delhi, May 20:  Two years of rendra Modi government has led to a “new trimoorti” that is a regression for India as a secular tion, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said on Friday. “These two years have seen a sharp increase in the economic burdens imposed on the vast majority of our people,” Yechury wrote in the latest issue of the CPI-M jourl “People’s Democracy”. “It is by now clear that in all the three major counts, this new trimoorti that is being sculpted, means both a regression for India as a secular democratic republic and a major onslaught on the livelihood of the vast majority of our people.”

Yechury said that as the country moved into the third year of the Modi government, there must be resistance “to reverse this disastrous course and defeat all efforts to negate our secular democratic foundations”.

According to Yechury, since Modi took power in May 2014, there was a relentless pursuit of aggressive commul polarization in a bid to change the country’s secular character “into the RSS version of a rabidly intolerant fascistic ‘Hindu Rashtra’”. The government was also pursuing the neo-liberal trajectory of economic reforms, more aggressively than done by the government of Manmohan Singh, “imposing unprecedented burdens on the vast majority of our people”, he said. And there was “increasing recourse to authoritarian measures undermining the institutions of parliamentary democracy and running roughshod over democratic rights and civil liberties”. (IANS)
