Union government announces ten percent reservation for poor people in general category

Guwahati: The union government, on Monday, announces that it has decided to give ten percent reservation in jobs and higher education to the people who belong to the economically backward general category and this certainly can be marked as a landmark move by the Modi government. This decision and announcement by the BJP government ahead of the Lok Sabha elections are hoped to be of help for Modi in winning the faith of the people of the nation.

The new reservation benefits were approved by the Union Cabinet on Monday and this reservation will be over and above the existing 50 percent reservation already availed by the people of the nation. As per the new decision, the government will amend Articles 15 and 16.

As reported, the reservation benefits will be availed by those whose family income is not more than Rs 8 lakhs per annum. Moreover, they should also possess not less than 5 acres of land and on such grounds only, they would be considered as eligible. This is also mandatory that the person's residential house should not be bigger than 1000 sq ft. Also, if the person’s residential plot is in a notified municipality area then it will have to be below 100 yards and if in a non-notified municipality area, then it would have to be below 200 yards.

With this new move taken by the Central government, it is being expected that BJP will garner an adequate upper caste vote in the forthcoming general elections.

On the other hand, Congress leader Harish Rawat has expressed his reaction to the reservation announcement. Rawat says that this decision of awarding ten percent reservation is nothing but a tactic of the Modi government to generate votes for the general elections. The opposition leader also stated that this will not save the BJP-led NDA government from facing defeat in the elections.

Former finance minister Yashwant Sinha has also termed this new announcement by the BJP government as a 'jumla'. Notably, Sinha had quit BJP last year. Speaking about the announcement on the reservation, he said that the government has no time to get it passed through Parliament.
