United Democratic Party must push for ILP and CAB: Adelbert Nongrum

SHILLONG: KHNAM MLA from North Shillong constituency Adelbert Nongrum has stated that the United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by NPP, should push the government to take up issues concerning the people of the State especially when it comes to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), 2019 (earlier it was 2016).

“The UDP has many MLAs and it holds the key to the stability of the MDA government. Hence, the party should push for issues concerning the interest of the people of Meghalaya,” Nongrum said while speaking with this scribe.

He said that the members of UDP and especially their MLAs and cabinet Minister in the MDA government should put the interest of the people before their own personal interest.

“The UDP should urge the State government led by NPP to implement ILP in Meghalaya and if it is serious about the interest of the indigenous people of this state then the UDP should also ask the government to take serious steps concerning the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill,” Nongrum said.

According to him, if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 is passed in the Rajya Sabha and becomes an Act it will put in danger the identity of the indigenous people of not only the State but also of the entire North East.
