UNSC strongly condemns the Pulwama Attack

Guwahati: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have strongly condemned the terror attack in Pulwama at Jammu & Kashmir that took place on February 14 where more than 40 CRPF jawans have been martyred.

In a press statement issued by the UNSC, it has expressed condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people of India and the Government of India and also wished a speedy recovery of the jawans who are injured.

The statement also mentioned, "The members of the Security Council reaffirm that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security."

The members of UNSC underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable. The members have also urged all the states to cooperate actively with the Government of India and all other relevant authorities in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant resolutions.

The statement also reads as, "The UNSC reiterates that any act of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable wherever, whenever and whomsoever committed. The members of UNSC have also reaffirmed the need for all states to combat by all means in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations under international law which also includes international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law.

The UNSC condemns the terror attack just after Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Maleeha Lodhi met top UN leaders. The meeting has also been led by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council President Anatolio Ndong Mba and they briefed about the escalating tensions in the region in the wake of the Pulwama attack.

France is also expected to soon move a proposal at the UN to ban the head of the UN-proscribed group in a major boost to India's efforts to get Azhar who was the mastermind of the attack on the airbase in Pathankot in January 2016. In 2009 and 2016, India moved the UN's sanctions committee to ban Azhar.

UN Secretary-General Guterres had also strongly condemned the Pulwama attack and called for those behind the attack to be brought to justice. He also stressed on the accountability under international law and perpetrators of terrorist acts to be brought swiftly to justice.

He further appealed to both the Indian and the Pakistan government to exercise maximum restraint to ensure the situation does not deteriorate further.
