Our Correspondent

UDALGURI, July 9: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has welcomed the proposal of the Government of India to redefine the role of the 48-year old North Eastern Council (NEC) with ‘conflict resolution’ set to become the new area of focus of the council. Discussion on the subject will be held during the ongoing 67th plenary session of the council in Shillong. The UPPL said that this was a golden hour for conflict resolution and high time to solve the insurgency and militancy problems of the Northeast as well as to solve the burning issues of various communities, groups and organizations.

This move of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, is a laudable and a right step in the right direction. This will go a long way in ushering peace and harmony in the Northeast, said the UPPL. It also appealed to the Government of India to bring an amicable solution of the problems of the SSB volunteers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and the north-eastern region.
