GUWAHATI, June 11: It has been a proven fact that drugs and other rcotic products are being peddled through trains in Assam and other northeastern States. The General Railway Police (GRP) personnel have proved this fact through the seizure of drugs from people travelling by trains. According to GRP sources, 204.5 kg ganja, 10.5 kg opium, 1.5 kg morphine, 1,453 bottles of phensidyle, 99 kg loose capsules and 65,456 SPM capsules were seized while being transhipped by train in 2015. As many as 15 people were arrested in that year while transhipping drugs. The situation, according to GRP sources, is even worse this year. Till April this year, 115 kg ganja, 37 kg opium, 339 bottles of phensidyle, 400 gm morphine and 42 kg (67,200) loose capsules have been seized. The number of people arrested for their involvement in drug paddling from various trains being run through Assam till April this year is 15. This is not all. Guwahati has become one of the target drug markets in the Northeast, besides being used as a transit route.
