‘Veer Naris’ felicitated at ex-servicemen reunion rally in Silchar

SILCHAR: War widows or ‘Veer Naris’ whose valiant husbands laid down their lives in different expeditions against the enemies of the nation were felicitated today at the ex servicemen reunion rally organized by Zila Sainik Welfare Office here in a solemn atmosphere. On this occasion were present former Brigadier N D Joshi, seva medal, director, Directorate of Sainik Welfare Assam, Colonel S Praveen, Honorary Captain G C Nath and a host of ex servicemen. The daylong programme began by paying homage to martyrs, followed by felicitation to distinguished guests.

Honorary Captain G C Nath delivered the welcome address. It was followed by the inspiring and ennobling speeches by Colonel S Praveen and Brigadier N D Joshi. After that, in the presence of veterans and distinguished guests, Veer Naris, 14 in all, were felicitated and given away prizes. They are the widows of the fallen heroes of World War II, encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, operations Rakshak and Pawan Sri Lanka (LTTE). The Veer Naris included Taburon Nessa, Asmath Ara Begum, Dipti Rani Sutradhar, Punimashi Devi, Jayada Begum Laskar, Moti Rani Singha, Milu Laskar and Chandra Sinha.

Along with the Veer Naris, Gopika Ranjan Sharma and H Senapati Singha were disabled during Indo-Pak war of 1971. Barendra Kumar Sengupta, Giriendra Kumar Dey and Adhir Chandra Biswas were honoured who have crossed the age of 80. Thorosena Rajkumar wife of Golak Chanda Singh nearing the century of age was also felicitated. It was a remarkable and memorable moment for nearly 500 ex servicemen and their companions as well as other present. The ex servicemen were given wheel chairs, free medicines and treatment by doctors from army military hospital at Masimpur cantonment. The occasion was also to make the ex servicemen and war widows aware of the various schemes and welfare measures initiated by the NDA government and advise them to avail themselves of these benefits. The programme was conducted ably by Subedar Major Dhwaj Singha.
