Voice & data services may soon be a reality on domestic flights

The day is not far when you can enjoy data and voice services in-flight throughout India as Telecom Commission, the highest decision-making body of Department of telecommunications (DoT) is all set to approve the long-awaited proposal in its meeting on 1^st May 2018.

A person aware of the ongoing matter on the condition of anonymity said, “We have taken approvals from all (including ministry of home affairs), we will initially allow data services but slowly get into voice services also”.

As soon as the proposal is approved by the DoT, airlines would be able to provide internet access to flyers onboard, however, the pricing would be up for the airlines to decide. In August 2017, the DoT had asked TRAI to put up its recommendations on the terms of licensing and provisions of in-flight connectivity for data, voice and video services.
