SILCHAR, May 20: Though with the onset of monsoon, this Valley has been experiencing scarce rains and rising mercury level, the sudden spate in the river Barak during the last 48 hours has taken the people of the region by surprise. This is a phenomenon which is quite inexplicable to commoners. Some of the low lying areas of the district have been submerged under the logged water of rains. As the water level of Barak is above the flood gates, the water is not being drained away. In addition, rainfall is adding fuel to the problem. As it rains the water level increases. As per the information shared by the Water Resource Department, heavy rainfall are expected in the catchment areas of Barak and its tributaries origiting from the hills of galand, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and the district of Dima Hasao. The water level continues to rise and the trend, as the forecast by the meteorological department says, will be on rise.
