Ways to boost business between India and Bhutan discussed in a meeting with Bhutan delegations

DHUBRI: An interactive session on agribusiness and livestock with Bhutan delegation was held at PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, NER office in Guwahati recently. It was attended by entrepreneurs from export and import background of the countries. In his welcome address, Deputy Resident Director, NER, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, NER, SK Hazarika welcomed the delegation from Bhutan as well as the participants attending the meeting.

While addressing the interactive session, Hazarika spoke about the ongoing business trade between India and Northeast India in particular and Bhutan said that various steps could be taken to further boost the business between the two countries.

Deputy General Manager, NEDFi, Manoj Kumar Das, in his address spoke on the trade history between the two countries. Das spoke on Bhutan procuring raw materials like ginger, and cardamom from Assam and the Northeast instead of procuring from other areas for their spice and honey industry.

“I suggest that fruits in large quantities should be supplied to Assam. I also suggest that value addition and technology up-gradation may help in trade increase. Since, Assam and Northeast India have a huge quantity of bamboo, procuring raw bamboo from the region may help Bhutan in exporting bamboo products,” Das added.

In his address, Marketing Officer, Regional Agricultural Marketing & Cooperative Office, Gelephu, Bhutan, Dawa Dakpa thanked PHD Chamber for hosting the delegation and spoke on the healthy trade and commerce relation between the two countries. Dakpa explained in detail as how commercialization along with value addition of many agricultural products would benefit the farmers and entrepreneurs of Bhutan.

“The main objective of the delegation coming to India was to explore different markets for Bhutanese products and also to try to establish a linkage between traders from both the countries,” Dakpa added. Lothuen Om Detshen, Gakdling Gewog, Sarpang Dzongkhog, and Kumbu Tshewang spoke about their objective of the visit to India and pointed out many problems they were facing in exporting their products to other countries.

“Beside this, we are also concerned as how to trade business can be increased between the two countries. I thank and express my gratitude to PHD Chamber for organizing the meeting for creating a conducive atmosphere for trade and business between two countries,” Dzongkhog said. Member, PHD Chamber, Bibhuti Dutta, offered vote of thanks to the Bhutanese delegation and entrepreneurs for participating in the meeting.
