JORHAT: A herd of over 150 marauding wild jumbos damaged and destroyed over several 100 hectares of cultivated rabi and Kharif crops like mustard, boro rice, pea, brinjal, cabbage and pulses in areas of lower Majuli. The herd is taking shelter at Dhonai Chapori. A woman and her daughter came face-to-face with a wild jumbo of the herd but both managed to escape with minor injuries, said Anil Das, a forest official of Majuli on Tuesday.

According to sources from Majuli forest division, the herd generally comes out from Dihing Reserve Forest and move along the banks of the Brahmaputra in search of food. A senior forest official of Majuli said that they were trying to push the herd towards Kaziranga where plenty of food is available.
