Women Military soon to be in Action, Says Nirmala Sitharaman

Guwahati: Making a historic announcement, the Defence Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman, said it on Friday that the government has moved ahead with time and have now been capable of thinking about recruiting women militaries. The armed forces, especially, the military division was perhaps the only sector in India that was so long been out of the reach of women which too will be a forgotten past now. As per the new announcements, there will be women militaries in armed forces from now which also indicates women empowerment to the utmost.

The induction of women into the military service will be done in a graded manner which will include twenty percent of the total Corps of Military Police. This has been stated in the official tweeter handle of the defense minister.

The tweeter post stated, "To improve representation of women in our armed forces Smt @nsitharaman takes a historic decision to induct women for the first time in PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) role in Corps of Military Police.

The role of the women militaries would include probing rape and molestation cases and also providing necessary assistance to the Army whenever required.

A similar hint was already being given by Army chief General Bipin Rawat who had said that a process of allowing women to participate in the fight against crime and to play an equal role as men, is underway. He had said that women will be recruited for positions in the military police.

Although there have already been women in the military forces, they were being given particular areas of service like medical, legal, educational, signal and engineering wings of the Army and this is the first time that they will be acting as a real army for combating crime.

The basic role of the military police includes policing cantonments and Army establishments, averting the breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, maintaining movement of soldiers, handling the prisoners of war and extending aid to civil police and it is these mainstream military police roles that women will be entitled to perform from now onwards.
