Workers urged to remain united to fight for legitimate demands

Mangaldai, May 2 : Synchronizing with the 131 Intertiol Labour Day, the Sadou Mangaldai Nirman Shramik Santha (SMNSS) - a workers’ body under whose banner majority of the construction laborers of the greater Mangaldai have been united, observed May Day on Sunday.

The day-long programme organized at the playground of Mangaldai Vidyapith High School began with the hoisting of the organizatiol flag by Saiyedur Rahman, president of the organization followed by unfurling of the ‘Lal Jhanda’ of Intertiol Workers’ Day by jourlist Mayukh Goswami and smriti tarpan jointly by prominent social worker Ramesh Ghosh and secretary of the organizing body, Atul Kalita. The observation also featured a plantation programme initiated jointly by Munmuni Dutta, Headmistress of Mangaldai Vidyapith and young entrepreneur Sekhar Mazumdar and a mass cultural rally with the participation of around 1,000 people from the workers’ community and other local leading citizens.

Prominent young businessman and social activist Ashok Bhragab flagged off the rally. In the open session held in the afternoon a host of distinguished guests including senior advocate of Gauhati High Court, Nekibur Zaman, prominent academician Bisitra Kr Medhi , senior jourlist Prab Gogoi and advocate Baharul Islam delivered their speech where they highlighted the significance of observing the day and urged the workers’ community to remain united to fight for their long-pending legitimate demands .The open session also witnessed giving away fincial aid to the close relatives of the members of the organization who recently lost their lives during duty. The celebration ended with a cultural evening which was iugurated by popular comedian Premanda Barua.

On the other hand, Mangaldai Ancholik Nirman Shramik Union under the State branch of the CITU observed the day in the office premises of Krish gar, Dakhsin Mangaldai. A semir on this occasion was held under the chairmanship of the president of Mangaldai chapter of BSNL employees’ union where Dr Rama Bora, a writer and progressive thinker participated as the appointed speaker. Similarly, Darrang District Public Transport Workers’ Union observed the day in Bhebarghat public bus station campus with a day-long programme, including community cleanliness drive, hoisting of flag and public meeting.

In the public meeting presided over by Bhupen Barua, adviser of the union, young social worker Gurujyoti Das and president of Darrang Bus Owners’ Association, Munin Dutta addressed the gathering and stressed the need of protecting the rights and justified demands of the transport workers.
