Workshop held on drug abuse and prevention

Dibrugarh, Oct 28: A workshop titled ‘One-day sensitization programme on drug abuse and prevention’ was organized by the Department of Psychology, Assam Women’s University (AWU), Rowriah, Jorhat in association with the tiol Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, on Saturday at the Library premise of AWU.
According to an AWU press release, the objective of the workshop was to equip participants with a language in which to articulate, approach and understand issues surrounding addictive behaviour, challenge negative stereotypes and identify and resist pressure to give in to addictive substances.
Registrar of the University,  AK Saikia iugurated the session. Academic Registrar Dr. LK Hazarika and Officer-on-Special Duty Dr G Hazarika graced the occasion along with resource persons Dr. Dipjyoti Bora and Dr Mustakim Ahmed, both Registrars of Department of Psychiatry, Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, who conducted sessions on ‘Addiction and Addictive Substances’ and ‘Resistance and Prevention of Drug Use’ respectively.
This was followed by a poster-making session where the participants combined random cue words assigned to each member to come up with a coherent rrative which they had to subsequently depict pictorially.
The day-long workshop saw an attendance of 128 participants in the age range of 17 to 23 years from various educatiol institutes across Jorhat, indicative of a growing interest to acquire information and awareness on issues surrounding substance addiction among college students.
