Workshop on integrated water resources magement held

SHILLONG, May 24: A one day workshop on “Integrated Water Resources Magement” was organized by the Water Resources Department, in collaboration with the

Meghalaya Water Resources Development Agency, at the State Convention Centre here today.

R. Lyngdoh Deputy Chief Minister graced the iugural function as Chief Guest, while PBO Warjri, former Chief Secretary was the guest of honour on the occasion.

In his iugural speech the Deputy Chief Minister

pointed out the need to conserve and mage the available water resources in the state of Meghalaya since, even though the state

receives high precipitation, the rainfall is limited to only five to six months in a year.

Further, due to the topography and terrain of the state, the surface run-off during monsoon drains off to the

neighbouring state and to Bangladesh.

He highlighted the various steps taken by the state with respect to harvesting of water through different activities and programmes.

The workshop was attended by officials and representatives from various departments and organizations such as Water Resources Department, Soil & Water Conservation Department, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Central Ground Water Board, MePGCL, MBDA, MeWDA, NERIWALM, IIT Guwahati, ICARE and Meghalaya Water Foundation.
