Workshop on teaching techniques held in NEIGRIHMS Shillong

Shillong: A 3-day workshop on ‘Teaching Techniques in Physiology Education Techniques’ was held at NEIGRIHMS, from the November 10 to 12. The series of workshops are an IUPS (International Union of Physiological Sciences) initiative. The theme of the workshop was, “To facilitate the exchange of knowledge about best practices in Physiology teaching”.

Resource persons in the workshop were world renown experts such as Professor Liisa Peltonen from the University of Helsinki, Finland, Professor Susan Barman from Michigan State University Professor Jayasree Sengupta and Professor D. Ghosh, AIIMS, New Delhi. Dr. DM Thappa inaugurated the three-day workshop on November 10 in the Institute auditorium.

Dr. Thappa deliberated upon the necessity of the time to have such workshops in the country and introduction of a new concept of teachings such as problem-based teaching, case-based teaching, and flip classroom teaching. Prof. Jayasree Sengupta, Chairperson, IUPS, in her keynote address deliberated upon the overall mission of IUPS.

She said, “International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) is an organization which is a kind of umbrella organization of Physiological Sciences. IUPS had a congress in Brazil in 2017 where seven recommendations came up to make Physiological sciences up to date and a need was felt for outreach to make people understand the mission.

NEGRIHMS, Shillong is one of the three centers in the country, where such a workshop is organized by the IUPS. Prof. D. Ghosh said that the IUPS is grateful to all three centers and especially to Director NEIGRIHMS, Prof. (Dr.) DM Thappa who was “extremely encouraging right from the point zero.”
