World No Tobacco Day: Theme This Year Is ‘Tobacco & Lung Health’

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (M) District Tobacco Control Cell, in collaboration with the State Tobacco Control Cell, Assam (STCCA), is going to observe the World No Tobacco Day with the theme ‘Tobacco and Lung Health’ on May 31 through various programmes.

Addressing the press here on Tuesday, Kamrup (M) district Tobacco Control Cell nodal officer Dr. Mridul Bharati Nath said: “Around 5,500 people start tobacco consumption daily in India where around 3,300 people die of tobacco consumption daily and around 12 lakh yearly. In the world around 40 lakh people die because of tobacco consumption annually. India is second in tobacco production and third in tobacco consumption in the world.”

Arundhoti Deka, the nodal officer of State Tobacco Control Cell, said: “We’re going to observe the World No Tobacco Day, 2019 at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati on May 31 on the theme – Tobacco and Lung Health. Programmes like art competitions, an open session, mass signature campaigns against the use of tobacco etc will mark the day.” Senior consultant Dr. Arzoo Dutta was also present at the press meet.
