World Toilet Day celebrated at Naharlagun

ITANAGAR: The World Toilet Day was celebrated in a benefiting manner at Chimpu and at IMC Naharlagun with great enthusiasm amidst huge participation of students, teachers, public on Monday. The Deputy Commissioner Capital Complex Prince Dhawan flagged off the rally for the World Toilet Day from Govt. Secondary School Chimpu to Govt. Middle School Chimpu. The DC took part in the rally along with the officials from the Department of PHE, students and the public.

The DC stressed that it is the time of life when children imbibe the basic habits, which they follow throughout their lives and urged the students to learn good habits. He stressed that as Capital Complex has been declared Open Defecation Free both at urban and rural level, therefore, it is our moral responsibility to maintain this status.

He sought cooperation of every individual to keep capital clean and green. He briefed about the hazards of open defecation and also highlighted the advantages of sanitation and personal hygiene. The DC also informed that the district administration along with the Department of PHE had also carried out repair and maintenance of water supply and toilets in every school of capital complex.

The DC also administered Swachhta pledge to the students to maintain hygiene and to stop open defecation.

The SE PHED Er Tayum Tok informed in details about the importance of the day. He explained about the health hazards and other environmental hazards that could result due to open defecation. He also urged people to use toilets to ensure a healthy and wealthy life. He said that a toilet is the indicator of the wealth of a country. He also urged people to avoid use of plastic and urged people to promote zero waste instead of leaving footprints of waste.

Er. Tadar Mangku, EE PHED stressed that as Itanagar has been declared Open Defecation Free which signifies that every household has a toilet, it is necessary that toilets should be maintained properly for use. He also briefed in details about the importance of using toilets. Explaining about the technology of Twin Pit Latrines which has won a gold medal at the national level and replicated globally, the EE stressed that the model is an environment friendly model which requires minimal maintenance.

The DC also distributed dustbins under SLWM (Solid Liquid Waste Management), to separate solid and liquid wastes and briefed about the mechanism to use it. Tamchi Kumar, President Chimpu Women Welfare Society submitted a three-point memorandum to the DC.
