YELLOW 29

YELLOW 29

Over the last couple of years, there has been a steady rise in the cafe culture of the city as a number of cafes and eateries have come up in different localities of the city. The latest entrant in this segment is Yellow 29. Located in Rajgarh Road of the city (Opposite Icon Academy), this unique pan Asian boutique café and bakery bistro is fast becoming the talk of the town.

The Yellow 29 is the brainchild of food entrepreneur and promoter Monmi Das, who is known for her exquisite bakes, and her husband Professor Amlandeep Das, a prominent educationist of the city. Within a very short time of its launch, the place has met with a highly favourable response and has witnessed an amazing number of footfalls within a very short period of time. A first-of-its-kind cafe in the city, Yellow 29 serves an exotic array of pan-Asian cuisine along with Monmi Das's signature baked items.

Talking about the concept behind the eatery, Monmi explains, "Basically the concept behind opening Yellow29 is to expose the people of Northeast India to the diversity of pan Asian cuisine. During my travels, I have found lot of similarity between the culinary habits and customs of Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan and the Northeast. Hence, you get a fare in Yellow 29 that encompasses all the flavours and herbs of these nations in one outlet."

While food cafes have come up in every corner of the city, what puts Yellow 29 in an altogether different league is its emphasis on serving healthy food in a homely environment. As Monmi explains, "I have realised that most conventional coffee shops and sit down restaurants are bereft of homely ambience. Identifying this gap perhaps find me to develop the food boutique concept that focuses on healthy cuisine, fresh prepared meals in a relaxed environment. At Yellow29 it is our endeavour to provide our clients with the best possible food cooked in a hygienic environment. I have also made it a point to serve the delicacies within a short frame of time."

Monmi has exploited her interest in the arts to spruce up the interiors and make it a warm and cosy retreat. Talking about the decor, she says, "I may sound boisterous but a creative person has no boundaries when one talks about innovative ideas. Baking and cooking have always been my favourite pass time since childhood, thanks to my mom and sister who inculcated in me this habit that turned to nature and me. So I cook, paint and bake with a passion that is inherent in me. Well, regarding the interiors of Yellow 29 I have exploited my interest in art, played with upcycled materials like empty bottles, furniture and turn them into decorative pieces that stand out in the boutique. I have also hand stitched culinary motifs like coffee mugs, teapots strainer, framed embroideries by using simple materials like paper, silk, cork, etc."

A foodie all through and through, Monmi Das is a celebrated cook who is popular for her exquisite baked items. A perfectionist to the core, she lends her signature élan to each and every item in the café. She further elaborates, "The menu has been designed keeping in mind food that can bring about a coherent balance between mind and body. I have, therefore, selected a fare that spreads across Southeast Asia to my own State. A hot favourite amongst my clients is the ubiquitous dimsum (momo). We also serve wraps with Asian flavours and grilled sandwiches. Other popular items are roast chicken/ Pork bowl, Thai bowl, smoked bowl that have various ingredients but the most popular dish in this segment is the Khowsuey. Other items in the menu are NE Fettuccini Prawns, Y29 Spaghetti Carbonara, Datchi, Jakarta meal and various other combo meals. The meals are served with condiments that are meant to be "pre-plated American service" and every item is garnished with homemade condiments. We are now really pushing the health values of our products that have no monosodium glutamate (MSG). I am selling cupcakes which are freshly baked every morning with butter as the base using genuine ingredients so they taste quite different from the commercial run -of-the -mill pastries that are sold in the market."

While the décor and food already scores high on our rating chart, we come down to the next important part. And that is the pricing. The prices are pretty competitive but are a bit on the upward side so as to attract only the serious foodie. Monmi Das says, "The price range of the various items in the fare varies according to the choice of the clients. The range ranges from Rs 100 to a maximum of Rs350. To drive sales, we have kept the prices at a very competitive rate."

So next time you are looking for the most happening café in town, don't forget to try Yellow 29!
