Youth dies while returning from idol immersion, Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Though the festivity of Durga Puja in Lakhimpur district concluded peacefully on Friday, the death of a youth cast a pall of gloom in North Lakhimpur town.

The youth was identified as Babuti Das (19), son of Jiten Das residing at Ward No. 12 of the town. As per reports, the youth fell from a vehicle on NH-15 near the Ranganadi River while it was coming back to the town after immersing the Durga idol in the river at Pahumara around 7 pm on Friday.

He was then run over by a tractor which was behind the vehicle. He died on the spot. He was cremated on Saturday after post-mortem.

Apart from this accident, the immersion of the idols in North Lakhimpur concluded in Ranganadi amidst elaborate arrangement made by the district administration. ADC Bipul Das, DDC Debashish Baishya, SP Sudhakar Singh, ASP Petrick Ronghang and DSP Dr. Rashmi Rekha Sarmah monitored the immersion activities at Ranganadi where 35 Durga idols were immersed.
