Youths' body cries foul over transfer of land

SHILLONG, May 23: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC)’s Raid Nongtung circle on Monday alleged that the Dorbar Shnong of Mawlasi had illegally transferred land of the Dorbar to Tilku Bahadur, a resident of Umwang, in 1999 violating the Meghalaya Land Transfer Act.
Speaking to newsmen at a press conference, Hercules Suting, president Raid Nongtung circle, said that the village heads are in close contact with the person who is an illegal migrant and without even convening a village meeting the documents of the land, measuring around 600 sq.fts, was handed over to him at Mawlasi.
According to a copy of the land document, from August 28, 1999, the Dorbar Shnong led by the secretary late F. Shadap and former Sordar L. Makdoh, handed over the land to him and as per the land document, one Bahadur is authorized to transfer the land to the future generations.
The document further states that he must open a shop in the area as it is a commercial area (Iew) and if found that he is uble to open shop then they will be compelled to take over the land from him.
“We have closed down the shop and we have also requested him and the Sordar to produce the documents related to the sale of land,” Suting said adding that the current Sordar Peter Thongni does not want to produce any papers relating to the land transfer.
He informed that the HYC will take up the matter with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Syiem of Hima Khyrim as Mawlasi falls under the Syiemship of Hima Khyrim.
