Zero success rate for more than 50 schools in Assam: Teachers blame faulty educational system

RESULT CRISIS

GUWAHATI: Not a single student from more than 50 schools in the State could pass this year’s HSLC/AHM exams, the results of which were declared on Wednesday.

Majority of the schools which scored zero pass percentage are being directly or indirectly run by the State government by spending a huge amount of money every year. Significantly, many schools have been performing the worst for the last few years.

Sources in the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) told The Sentinel that altogether 289 schools have scored zero to nine per cent pass percentage in the HSLC/AHM exams, 2019.

Teachers of leading government schools have, however, blame it on less academic days, lack of awareness among guardians and engagement of teachers in nonacademic activities.

“Academic days are shrinking. Every year classes XI and XII examinations are held in our school for which we lose almost two months,” said Cotton Collegiate Government HS School principal Balay Kumar Borah.

Tarini Choudhury Government Girls’ HS & MP School principal Chittaranjan Kalita said guardians of their school are not aware what their children’s study. “When we call a guardians’ meet, hardly 50 of the 500 children’s parents turn up. This reflects how conscious they are,” Choudhury said.

“In the last panchayat elections, the school was closed for one month. Five teachers are in NRC duty for the past two years and right now a section of the school is being used as a centre for NRC claims and objections,” Sonaram HS School principal Manju Rani Barman said.
