ITANAGAR: As many as 311 schools in Arunachal Pradesh are defunct due to zero enrollments; the State Assembly was informed on Thursday.

Education Minister Taba Tedir in response to a written question by senior Congress member Nabam Tuki informed that as per the 'Unified District Information on School Education plus' (UDISE +) data of 2018-19, the State has recorded 311 defunct school.

UDISE+ (UDISE plus) is an updated and improved version of UDISE. Tedir disclosed that most of the schools are located in the remote areas of the State and the major reasons for zero enrollments was due to lack of infrastructure facilities in the remote areas and lack of students due to migration of parents towards the headquarters.

There are about 1300 primary schools, well above 300 middle schools and as many as 103 high schools in Arunachal Pradesh.

The total number of higher secondary schools in the State stands at 68.

The Minister informed that stipends were being provided to the students of primary and upper primary schools having hostel facilities at the rate of Rs 800 per month for students of Classes from I to V and Rs 900 per month for students of classes from VI to VIII.

Altogether 2, 821 students of Classes I to V are receiving stipends and 9,877 students of classes VI to VII as well, the Minister stated.

He added that the stipend funds are allocated by the Deputy Directors of School Education (DDSEs) and the district authority distributes the school-wise stipends to the students.

Tedir, while replying to a question in the Assembly session last year had disclosed that the department would close all non-functional schools with zero enrollments and would focus on strengthening the functional schools.

While responding to a query in the last session on whether efforts have been initiated to make those schools functional, Tedir said, the government had asked officials to check if those schools could be made functional.

The Minister had stated that the Department constituted a committee on how to utilize the assets and infrastructure that have been created for all defunct schools in the State.
