Arunachal celebrates International Yoga Day

Itanagar, June 21: Arunachal Pradesh today joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Yoga by organizing yoga sessions in various parts of the state.

Participating in the observance of the day at Rajiv Gandhi University near here, Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra appealed to the people to inculcate yoga as part of their lifestyle.

He said that many important medico-academic assets of Indian cultural heritage had, during the long foreign rules been thrown out of practice.

However, on December 11, 2014 at the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the yoga has been adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, with overwhelming support of its 177 members and June 21 has been declared as the International Day of Yoga.

The Governor, who has been practicing yoga for forty years, shared his experiences and importance of the ‘physio-mental’ wellbeing legacy of yoga. He also explained the important procedural aspects of yoga practice.

The Governor said that the first stage of yoga is to adopt correct pre-asana position, second, slowly getting to the yoga posture, third, holding the posture for minimum for a minute and maximum for three minutes and fourth, slowly moving out of the posture to pre-asana position.

Mishra, who hails from the Black Commando Organization said that all top commandoes practice yoga and pranayam for concentration, tension free mind and raising of will power.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu along with Home Minister Kumar Waii and other Cabinet colleauges joined the yoga session organized at 1st Arunachal Pradesh Police Battalion at Chimpu near here while Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein joined the session along with BJP state unit president Tapir Gao at Indira Gandhi Park here. “Along with physical fitness activities, we must also keep our mind under control and healthy. Our mental health is important to wean away emotional weaknesses,” Khandu said.

He said “Yoga not only keeps us physically fit but also keeps the mind calm, present and mindful. By being mentally and physically fit, we can overcome any negative emotions and have better decision making capability.” The Chief Minister stressed on government officials, police personnel and politicians to practice yoga to fight stress developed due to hectic life.

He said by maintaining overall psychological well-being, we can raise our capability to work and make ourselves more productive.

Khandu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the yoga to the United Nations and through it making it as a world event. He said more than 170 countries at the UN had supported the motion for celebration of International Day of Yoga.

He also said the date of International Day of Yoga is special because it is the longest day of the year across the northern hemisphere and shortest in southern hemisphere.

The Chief Minister on the occasion released a souvenir ‘Wellness First’ published by the police department.
