ITANAGAR: Protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) took off as hundreds of people came down to the streets of Itanagar to protest against it, on Monday.

The protest was organized by the United Arunachal Indigenous Peoples Forum (UAIPF) and All Arunachal Students Union Bengaluru (AASUB) under the banner of Northeast Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) from Tennis Court to Raj Bhawan.

Speaking to reporters, president of UAIPF Laffe Paffa informed that the protest rally was organized under the banner of NEFIP and similar programmes were organized in the entire northeastern States to express peoples’ anguish over the contentious bill that has been introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

“Despite strong resentment and protest against the CAB from across the northeastern States, we don’t understand why the Central Government is so adamant to introduce the Bill,” Paffa said while adding that the protest will not stop and continue till the demands are fulfilled.

He also criticized MP Kiren Rijiju, MP Tapir Gao and Chief Minister Pema Khandu for being mute spectators in the issue.

He said that the Bill will completely change the demography in the State; even Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 and Chin Hills Regulation 1896 will not protect the indigenous people and their land from outsiders once the Bill is passed.

When asked about the support to the proposed bandh called by the NESO and AAPSU on Tuesday, he stated “We all should come forward and join the movement and support the bandh call for the sake of our indigenous rights.”
