ITANAGAR: An FIR has been registered at the Women’s Police Station here against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Goruk Pordung for allegedly raping a woman. Goruk Pordung termed the allegation “politically motivated and a move to tarnish his image”.

As per the contents of the FIR, the alleged incident took place on October 12 at a hotel here.

Representing the BJP, newcomer Pordung had defeated former Home Minister Kumar Waii in this year’s Assembly election by a margin of 393 votes to become the legislator of Bameng Assembly constituency which falls in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The victim in her complaint has stated that the MLA called her at around 8-9 pm and asked her to meet her in the hotel where he wanted to discuss some matters related to the Bameng Primary Health Centre (PHC) in which she is posted as a medical officer.

“After I reached the hotel, I waited for him outside and after sometime he asked me to come inside. Accordingly, I went in and expected other staff members to be present. But I was shocked to see him along inside the room. Though I was scared to get inside he called me in and offered me a glass of wine. I refused but he forced me to have it and locked the door,” the FIR read.

I asked him what issue was there to discuss but he instead started to molest me and then raped me, the complaint added.

The victim has also alleged that the legislator physically abused her and threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the incident.

He left me alone at the hotel after which she called my husband, she said while adding that she was later taken home by some persons she knew.

Speaking to the media persons, Capital Superintendent of Police Tumme Amo said a case has been registered and an enquiry will be initiated accordingly.

When questioned over the delay in registering the case, Amo said, “It was because a preliminary investigation had to be initiated following a counter-complaint from the MLA.”

Amo said that the police are looking at all possible angles.

“We are investigating whether it is case a rape or of a consensual relationship because the lady had gone to the hotel on her own at around 10 pm,” the SP said while adding that the staff of the hotel in their statements have also confirmed that both the accused and the victim had visited the hotel on the particular night.

“Justice will be delivered,” the SP said.

Goruk Pordung, in a clarification said that “no such incident of rape took place on October 12 and it was also not the first time they had met each other.

The MLA said he had also helped the lady financially on her request in a couple of occasions. He further alleged that the lady of “seducing” him during their meeting that took at Hotel Ashoka before October 12.

Talking about Saturday’s incident he said: “I was at my friend’s place when she constantly called me and asked to come to near PYBSS hotel by all means. She said she wanted to discuss matters in regards to the expenditure her husband had incurred during the election preparation earlier this year. On continuous persistence, I reached the hotel at around 10.15 pm and thereafter we headed towards Paramount Hotel and booked a room jointly to discuss the matter at her own free will.”

“There was no force excreted to her in any manner. After the discussions we parted with an assurance to discuss the matter further to solve the financial crisis being faced by her family. However, after she left, she texted me saying that a group of youths were roaming outside the hotel and I shouldn’t venture out as she apprehended that some untoward incident would happen.

Accordingly, I left the hotel after those youths left the vicinity of the hotel. There was no question of rape in any manner as the staff of the hotel witnessed everything,” Pordung’s clarification read.
