Five Assam Police Held For ‘Colluding’ With Drug Peddler

BORDUMSA: Five personnel of the Assam Police were caught red handed by local people here when they were taking bribes from a suspected drug peddler. According to a source, the cadres of the Assam Police attached to Bordumsa Police Station are being interrogated by senior officials. The local people of the area have demanded the immediate arrests of the policemen.

Talking to the media, an activist of the Moran students’ body alleged that a drug peddler was held earlier along with suspected contraband and was subsequently handed over to the police. The policemen in their civvies took the peddler to a nearby forest and started to demand money for his safe release.

Meanwhile, the local people, including women, conducted a series of raids and held several offenders in no time from the market place located within 200 metre radius of the border check gate and handed them over to the police. Several hundred bottles of illegally stored foreign liquor were also recovered during the search of the market. Several local drug peddlers were also caught by the mob and handed them over to the police.

“What has astounded us is the open sale of drugs in the market”, said an agitated Gorkha student activist, adding “the fish market along the border road has turned into a wholesale drug hub affecting both Arunachal and Assam.”

Talking to The Sentinel, Asif Ahmed, Additional Superintendent of Police, Tinsukia said that the wrongdoers would not be spared, whosoever he or she may be. “If found guilty, the law would take its natural course against the police personnel also,” said Ahmed.
