Indira Gandhi Government College organizes conference on women empowerment

Itanagar: Indira Gandhi Government College, Tezu in Lohit district, on Monday organized a day-long conference on “Issues and Challenges of Women Empowerment in 21st Century”.

The conference was sponsored by the National Commission for Women. Eminent resource persons and delegates from different parts of the country as well as the key functionaries of Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) participated in the conference and made scholarly deliberations on the crucial topic, a press release informed here.

Principal of the college Dr Kangki Megu expressed great optimism that the conference would go a long way to create a good academic ambience in the institution.

He reiterated that the process of women empowerment in a tribal society like Arunachal Pradesh is primarily rooted in the state institutions.

In order to make the process of women empowerment, a sustainable one, he outlined the need for a viable women movement as well as enhancement of women literacy in the state.

Assistant professor of English department Mikta Mansai coordinated the conference and highlighted its objectives with a framework to address the emerging challenges of women empowerment.

Dibrugarh University Professor of Commerce Dr Ajanta Borogohain Rajkonowar in her keynote address emphasized on the need for improving socio-economic, nutritional health and intellectual status of women with adequate constitutional safeguards.

She pleaded for more women positions in power and entrepreneurship and also dismantling glass ceiling in the existing social structure.

Making their presentations in technical sessions Radhilu Chai, Chairperson of APSCW, outlined various strategies for empowering women in 21st Century while Dr Debika Saha from North Bengal University analysed the theoretical contours from a feminist standpoint.

Dr Ujithra Ponniah from Tata Institute of Social Science, Hyderabad discussed about women empowerment from developmental perspective while Dr Madhurima Goswami of Tezpur University examined women studies in higher education system in India and two research scholars from Nagaland University also spoke on the role of women in agricultural development, the release added.
