Police destroy poppy field in Changlang, Arunachal

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh police on Tuesday destroyed a poppy field at Miao in Changlang district.
Miao Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Tashi Darang informed that on a tip-off received from Changlang SP JK Lego, he constituted a team comprising Miao police station OC Inspector Ege Ete, SI J Aran along with police constables, IRBn and CRPF personnel and started the operation to destroy the field located between Old Champu and Namphai-II villages. Miao Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Tage Rumi also accompanied the team.
However, no arrest were made during the operation, Darang said. The SDPO lamented that even as many cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were registered in various police stations, brown sugar, opium selling and illegal drugs peddling incidents are rising in Miao sub-division area, which shares its border with Myanmar.
However, the police have adopted zero tolerance against illegal drug related activities, particularly against illegal poppy cultivation under the vigilance of SP, the SDPO added.
Poppy or opium cultivation and addiction has been a serious problem in several districts of the State since the last couple of decades. The most affected districts include Changlang, Tirap, Longding, Namsai, Lohit, Dibang Valley and Anjaw.
