ITANAGAR, July 11: “Small family has many advantages. It is key to prosperous life and can provide high quality education to the children and can avail a better and healthy life in the society thus producing worthy citizens for the country,” Health & Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang said on the occasion of World Population Day here.

The programme on World Population Day was organized by the AP State Health Mission at the Vivekananda Hall, RKHM, Itanagar, with the theme “Ek sarthak kal ki shuruwat, Parivar niyojan ke sath.”

Libang said that it is high time to self analyze the growth of the world population. Population should be as per the space available. Due to over population, there has been alarming demographic trends which is harmful for the ecological balance, he said. The Minister exhorted the students and youths to contribute through concerted actions and responsibility to spread awareness about the benefits of small family so that people grow in quality not in numbers.

Special Secretery cum Mission Director (NHM), Dr. Tapasya Raghav, said that the quality of life is affected due to rapid growth in population. For a healthy society there should be quality education, health, upbringing and all should get decent food. These are possible only through small family. Small family also helps in empowering women. They have more time to pursue their field of interest instead of becoming a child bearing machine, she added.

She also informed that our country has very low human development index in terms of education, health etc. Therefore, the message of adopting the small family norms should be carried forward to the masses which can be a game changer, said the Special Secretary cum Mission Director.

Earlier the Health Minister flagged off a rally consisting of students, staffs and members of Bullet Club from Tennis Court, IG Park, Itanagar which culminated at Vivekananda Hall, RKMH.

The day was also celebrated at Community Health Centre (CHC), Kimin and Doimukh. Speaking on the occasion, SDO Kimin J Padung highlighted the importance of WPD and said that this day aims at spreading awareness among the people about the ever growing population globally and it’s controlling measures.

He advised the people to take advantage of medical facilities and guidance that are being provided by health department to have a happy and small family. District Medical Officer (DMO) Papum Pare Dr Subu Tasso Kampu called upon the people to adopt ‘Hum Do Hamare Do’ – the two child norms for better life.
