1.5 km of highway per day is built in Northeast under PM Narendra Modi, UPA lesser at 0.6 kms per day

The success of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the Northeast region since PM Narendra Modi came into power in 2014 can be well accessed in the creation and development of highways in the region.

Where it was creation of 0.6 kms of national highways built each day during the UPA government during 2009-2014, road and highway construction during the BJP Modi government increased double-fold, hitting an all time high of 1.5 kms per day in the time span of 2014 to March 2019. This data is as acquired by the latest road transport and highways ministry.

In its regime since the BJP government came into power, various central government agencies including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) built a total of 2731 kms of national highways across the ‘seven sister’ northeast states and Sikkim. In comparison, the UPA government built only 1,079.25 kms of roads during the year frame 2009-2014.

India context:

In its first stint as the Prime Minister, the Narendra Modi government built 73% highways across the country in the first four years. During that period, the government constructed a total of 28,531 kms of national highways since financial year 2014-15 in contrast to the 16,505 kms of highways built by the previous UPA government up to financial year 2013-14.

India at present holds the second biggest road network in the world. The road ministry has planned to develop about 60,000 kms of highways over the next five years. The Narendra Modi government is also looking forward to construction of 950 kms of highways at a whopping cost of Rs30, 000 crores. The NHAI has identified various stretches covering 950 kms of highway projects across the country for the same. This proposed construction will be done under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways led by Nitin Gadkari is focussing on the construction and development of roads and highways as prime elements of economic growth.
