LAKHIMPUR: A doctor tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday in Lakhimpur district. In addition to him, the infection was also detected in the swabs of two more returnees from other States on the same day.

The doctor infected with the coronavirus is Dr. Hashid Zaman (24) who is a Medical Officer and was the in-charge of the quarantine facility set up at OPD College. He is a resident of Guwahati and was rendering his relentless service as a frontline fighter against the pandemic contagion as one year appointee doctor after completing MBBS course. His swab sample was collected on June 1 and sent to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) on June 2 and result of his swab test was reported on Wednesday. The doctor was admitted in the isolation ward of North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital.

On the other hand, the other two COVID-19 positive patients of the district are Tapan Hazarika (24) of Panigaon and Azaz Ahmed of Keyamora (19) under Bihpuriya. Tapan Hazarika is a returnee from Hyderabad while Azaz Ahmed came back home from his workplace in Maharashtra. They were shifted to the Dedicated COVID Health Centre (DCHC) of Lakhimpur set up at Telahi Model Hospital. With these three newly-detected patients, the active COVID-19 cases in Lakhimpur rose up to 47.

Notably, the unruly attitude and behaviour of a section of COVID-19 patients in Lakhimpur district who had been quarantined at OPD College Quarantine Facility before they tested positive for coronavirus, is suspected to be the main reason for the infection in the doctor. This section of patients concerned had shown their disapproval towards adhering to the quarantine norms and guidelines in the quarantine facility and created an untoward situation while disregarding the medical personnel. They continued creating the same situation at the DCHC too where they were admitted after testing positive.

On Wednesday, Dr. Hashid Zaman was to celebrate his 24th birthday on account of which his parents arrived in Lakhimpur from Guwahati. But the birthday celebration could not be held as per expectations because the swab test result came positive.

The Lakhimpur District Health Department sent a total of 109 swab samples to AMCH on Wednesday for COVID-19 test. The Health Department quarantined a total of 1,902 returnees till Tuesday while 1,533 were discharged. There are 369 inmates in quarantine facilities in the district at present.
