86,000 people hit by floods due to heavy downpour in Goalpara

GOALPARA: The heavy downpour for the last few days around the State has affected Goalpara district also and caused flood in several low-lying areas.

According to Goalpara district administration source, 86,000 people in 139 villages have been affected in the latest flood under the four revenue circles of Balijana, Lakhipur, Matia and Rongjuli.

Among these villages, 55 from Balijana, 72 from Lakhipur, 10 from Matia and 2 from Rangjuli revenue circle have been inundated and in many villages people were shifted to safer places. The district administration has opened at least 11 relief camps and began distributing relief materials. More than 1,500 people have taken shelter in these camps. In Lakhipur revenue circle, approximately 3,000 hectares of agricultural land have been affected. A large number of livestock has also suffered in this deluge.
