Guwahati: In a milestone development, Assam has opened up one more testing facility at the North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, Assam, a constituent establishment of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.

Sarma said that today is a milestone day for Assam, as a testing facility has been set up outside the medical science stream. "This institute is for science and research, but still, at the time of crisis faced by the nation, the CISR has come forward and joined hands with the Government of Assam to test Covid-19 patients", Sarma told media.

Sarma said that the total testings will reach 1 lakh in a day or two. "But we want to do more and more tests because we want to separate Covid-19 patients from society", he stated. The Minister also informed media that several more labs are in the works to increase testing facility. It is pertinent to mention here that this is the second testing facility in Jorhat after the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) that has already been conducting tests.

The health minister also inspected the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and oversaw the discharge of 4 patients who were released from the hospital after recovering from the respiratory illness. He was accompanied by Ministers Atul Bora and Pijush Hazarika as well as BJP MPs Kamakhya Tasa and Topon Kumar Gogoi.

In another significant development, the first super-specialty COVID-19 hospital of the Northeast was formally inaugurated in Guwahati on Friday beside the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital GMCH). The COVID-19 hospital which was inaugurated by Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his deputy Pijush Hazarika has been constructed at a cost of Rs 150 crore. Addressing media persons, Sarma informed that UV radiation equipment has been imported from Canada that are being installed in the hospital to prevent transmission via conditioned air. According to the Assam Health department, the hospital is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology with 200 beds and 60 intensive care units (ICU).
