A Tribute to Urbashi Bala Das

Urbashi Bala Das, a resident of Koinadhara, Khanapara, Guwahati breathed her last on January 19 at the age of 80. She was born on July 12,1940 at Solmara, a remote village of Pashim Nalbari of Nalbari District. Her father was a simple fisherman and therefore, his livelihood was fishing. At that time fishing was not a dignified profession and hence his family income was very low. So it was difficult to maintain his big family with that low income. As a result, her father was not in a position to offer proper education to all of his sons and daughters.

On the other hand, their family has a cultural background of dance, music and folk songs. Therefore, all the brothers and sisters of late Urbashi Bala Das were involved in those cultural activities from their childhood. Two of her brothers earned their livelihood through dances and music in mobile theatre. Naturally, she was also accustomed with it. She sang various folk songs and practised dances when she was at her parents’custody. Later on, in various occasions she used to perform folk songs and dances and it always delighted the gatherings.

Urbashi Bala Das got marriage with Narayan Ch. Das of same village, Solmara. Her husband was a small businessman and with his limited income he with the help of his laborious and foresighted wife Urbashi, maintained a big family of seven sons and one daughter. They were ambitious enough to provide proper education to their sons and daughter although they had no required resources. As ‘there is will there is way’- they succeeded partially to make their sons and daughter educated and established inspite of economic hardship.

She was very jolly, responsible and a smart woman. During her stay at Solmara she busied herself in various social and cultural activities besides taking cares of her family. When she was at Koinadhara with one of her sons she was closely connected with Koinadhara Sakha Sahitya Sabha, Mahila Samity and Koinadhara Senior Citizen Sanmilan.

She was a supportive wife, a loving mother and grand mother and an exemplary mother-in-law encouraging her all daughter-in-laws in every endeavour. She will always continue to inspire us all. On her adya sraddha, we offer our sincere respect to her and deep condolence to the bereaved family.
