ACTA Protests Against ‘Misconduct’ by Lakhimpur Commerce College Principal In-charge

LAKHIMPUR: The Assam College Teachers’ ACTA unit of Lakhimpur Commerce College once again took strong exception of the continued misconduct by its Principal-in-charge Dr Bhima Sen Behera on Saturday.

Notably, the Principal-in-charge of the college, who has been allegedly in tenterhooks with the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college since May this year, allegedly misbehaved with senior professor in English, Sazzad Hussain of the college while he was typing question papers meant for the internal examination of the undergraduate courses in a college computer. As per the allegation of the ACTA unit of the college, the Principal-in-charge misbehaved with professor Hussain for which the organization protested by preventing him from entering his chamber. The ACTA unit of the college also strongly condemned the misconduct by Dr Behera. Regarding the issue, they met the Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police, Hare Krishna Nath and appraised him about the development. The SP also assured of taking needful action over the issue.

In a press communique, the ACTA unit of the college alleged that the Principal-in charge was responsible for the non-payment of salary for three months since May this year by not extending his power for Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO). Amidst protests and complaints by the teachers and office staff of the college, the Director of Higher Education, Government of Assam, terminated the DDO capacity of Dr Behera and appointed the Inspector of Schools, Lakhimpur as the new DDO of the college on July 30 this year. Despite being stripped of the DDO power, Dr Bhima Sen Behera opened a Savings Bank Account (73462200021780) for the college for an ICSSR grant illegally.

The ACTA unit of Lakhimpur Commerce College, in a press communiqué, said that Dr. Bhima Sen Behera had been creating an unhealthy atmosphere at the college by regularly disturbing and bullying fellow teachers. Women members of the teaching staff are also not feeling safe in the college for his actions. Being a professor of English, Dr Bhima Sen Behera has not taken any class at the college ever since he assumed the charge in November, 2016. The Principal-in-charge of the college is also accused of using student union leaders against their teachers in the college.

The ACTA unit has already demanded the appointment of a permanent Principal, new president of the college governing body and removal of Dr Bhimasen Behera as Principal-in-charge.
