LAKHIMPUR: Within one day of enforcing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, a huge crowd of people once again vented their pent-up resentment against the government.

Taking part in the protest rally titled ‘Gana Samadal’ organized under the auspices of the Lakhimpur district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), hundreds of protesters rocked North Lakhimpur town on Saturday demanding the scrapping of the controversial Act. The protesters shouted various slogans in support of their demand and expressing their stand of never accepting the Act under any circumstance. By shouting slogans, they also flayed the BJP-led Union Government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for enforcing the ‘destructive’ Act while the State Government, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP and AGP leaders were slammed for supporting and advocating in favor of the Act.

The protest rally, which was taken out from the North Lakhimpur Government Boys’ HS School playground, passed through the entire North Lakhimpur town. Besides the All Assam Students’ Union, multiple anti-CAA organizations also took part in the stir. After the rally, effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were burnt in front of the Lakhimpur DC office for enforcing the Act from Friday by ignoring the massive protest programs against it.

Prior to taking out the rally, a protest meeting was organized by the Lakhimpur district AJYCP unit in the same playground wherein people took part spontaneously. AJYCP State committee assistant general secretary Saurabh Das, district president Mondeep Neog, general secretary Jyoti Das, Lakhimpur AASU president Pulok Jyoti Borah, general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta and several leaders of the anti-CAA organizations spoke against the Act in the protest meeting.

Saurabh Das said that both governments were indulging in dirty politics at present to silence the anti-CAA agitation across the State. He reiterated that the conspiracy of both governments, hatched for granting citizenship to aliens, would not be allowed to succeed.

On the other hand, Dhanmoni Dutta condemned the Union Government for enforcing the Act in the nation since January 10 while neglecting the democratic movement against the same across the State as well as the country. In connection, he severely criticized the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, the Chief Minister and the State Finance Minister. All the speakers unanimously reiterated to carry on intensified agitation until and unless the CAA was scrapped.
