SILCHAR: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Silchar unit, celebrated its 72th foundation day on a solemn note here as National Students' Day. The usual joy and enthusiasm of the celebration was subdued due to the spectre of coronavirus all around. Maintaining social distance, dedicated members of ABVP assembled in the morning of Wednesday in the open compound of the Parishad office here at Rangirkhari, hoisted the flag of the all India organisation, followed by floral tributes at the portraits of Goddess Saraswati and Swami Vivekananda. Prof. Ratan Kumar Das, president of the Silchar unit, and Mahesh Bhagwat, north east area public relations chief, threw light on the background against which ABVP was born and briefly traced its history and historical events of its more than 7 decades of saga.

Kaberi Nag, state student, spoke about some important phases of the organisation of the Silchar unit to refresh the memory of present day ABVP workers and give them inspiring anecdotes. All the speakers spoke about the organisation being different from all other student outfits which work more in the interest of political parties of their affiliations than for the society and the nation. With its emphasis on three ideals of imparting knowledge, building strong character and integrity among students, ABVP has its own set goal to play constructive role in normal and extraordinary situations with the spirit of nationalism and patriotism.

Mahesh Bhagwat said ABVP has been relentlessly raising its voice against the anti national elements of Jadavpur and Jawahar Lal Nehru Universities which have turned into cockpits of disruptive forces. He also brought in specific references of how ABVP workers have been fighting against extreme Left and Naxal elements risking their life and limb. "Our fight is also for making education system more aligned to nationalist thinking to produce not only degree holders but great sons of the country." Shivam Barua, an active member of ABVP, quite ably conducted the programme. Also present on the occasion were Premojyoti Nath, Budha Paul and all the members of Silchar unit.
