TANGLA: “The Brahmins have immensely contributed to the uplift of society since time immemorial and have also contributed towards the growth of the greater Assamese society. But the successive governments at the Centre and State have suppressed the community in various spheres,” said social activist Shiva Prasad Sarma at the general meet of the Udalguri chapter of All Assam Brahmin Yuva Parishad here at Tangla in Udalguri district on Tuesday.

The meeting was presided over by Pankaj Sarma and was addressed by the activists of the All Assam Brahmin Yuva Parishad who called for unification of the Brahmins into a single platform, irrespective of linguistic afflation, to voice for equal rights of the people of the community by scrapping the reservation system and preaching the Vedic system of education, including Sanskrit education, religious education among others.

“We are economically discriminated by the government. Our children don’t get scholarships, admissions for higher education despite securing high marks and despite living hand-to-mouth. Our kith and kin are forced to get into self-employment in the name of high caste,” said Kautilya Devi.

“This is a welcome move to integrate the Brahmins into a common platform and to fight for equal constitutional rights,” said Sailen Kumar Sharma. “In previous times, classes were formed in the society on the basis of the profession but times have changed and reservation policies must be amended. Everyone must perform their responsibilities and duties along with preserving one’s ritual, food, and culture,” said Tirtha Ranjan Goswami.
