Anarchy in IWT Dibrugarh Division, AATSU Submits Memo

LAKHIMPUR: The All Assam Tribal Students’ Union (AATSU) submitted a memorandum to the Director of Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department on Thursday regarding the departmental anarchy which has affected the IWT Dibrugarh Division.

The president of the organization, Nirmal Payeng, who called on the IWT Director BB Dev Choudhury at his office in Guwahati, informed this correspondent that the rejuvenation of the Ghagar Parghat of Subansiri River operated under the division was demanded at the earliest on behalf of the organization.

Further, the organization demanded the Director to introduce ferry services with developed machines, to initiate action against the illegal charging of ferry fares by the contracted lessees at the parghat, to allot life jackets, to initiate strict action against the IWT employees who always refrain from their duties without attending their sites, to appoint trained pilots to operate the ferries, to abolish the lessee system and to operate the parghats through the department.

The president of the organization stated that the Director assured him of launching a departmental enquiry with a view to reform the division and to propel public-friendly activities.
