APCC delegation visits Baghjan blowout site in Tinsukia district

DOOMDOOMA: A delegation of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) comprising former ministers Rakibul Hussain and Pranati Phukan, Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij, former MLAs Sushanta Burhagohain and Raju Sahu and several others visited Baghjan under Doomdooma PS in Tinsukia district on Tuesday afternoon and took stock of the situation arising out of continuous spewing of gas because of the blowout in Oil India Limited (OIL)'s BGR-5 well since May 27.

The APCC delegation visited the relief camps and interacted with the local people. The delegation also distributed some food items and masks among the inmates of the relief camps.

Baghjan Gaon Milanjyoti Yuva Sangha submitted a memorandum to the APCC delegation enlisting their various demands and grievances. Receiving the memorandum, the leader of the delegation, Rakibul Hussain said that they would raise the issues mentioned in the memorandum in the State Assembly and would take up the matter with the OIL authority.

Later, talking to mediapersons, Hussain demanded that the OIL authority must control the blowout of gas from the well immediately and give adequate compensation to the affected people of the area. The Congress leader expressed serious concern over the death of a river dolphin, fishes and tortoise in the Maguri - Motapung Beel which is close to the site. He also expressed concern over the environmental impact that the gas condensate had on the flora and fauna of the nearby Dibru- Saikhowa National Park.
