Assam: 13-Year-Old Heart Patient Admitted to GMCH Recovers from Coronavirus, Released

Guwahati:

A 13-year-old girl from Assam, who was tested positive for the coronavirus upon return from Mumbai where she had gone for a heart surgery, was released after recovery today. She had tested positive for the dreaded virus on May 13, and was admitted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) a day later on May 14.

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the details from "The girl is from Golaghat and had gone for an open-heart surgery in the SRCC Hospital in Mumbai. She could not return immediately, and when we arranged buses for ferrying cancer patients back to Assam, she came. The girl tested positive, but her mother did not test positive."

The mother, however, refused to leave the side of her afflicted daughter. "They stayed in the same room in the GMCH for almost 11 days, but still the mother did not test positive (for the virus). We performed 3 tests on the mother and she tested negative", Sarma said, adding that both mother and daughter have now been released from the hospital.

Sarma also informed that two cancer patients' attendants who had tested positive after returning from Mumbai had also tested negative today, leading to a subsequent release. "Similarly, two more patients have been released in Jorhat", announced Biswa Sarma.

"We released 5 patients today, but the Covid-19 numbers have increased significantly, and the number of released persons is 62", Sarma said, adding that 21 persons are currently undergoing treatment in the GMCH.

It is pertinent to mention here that several cases have been reported in Northeast Indian states in the past 24 hours. Earlier today, Nagaland, which had been left untouched by the contagion, reported 3 positive cases, the first in the state. In Tripura, 3 more persons were tested positive for the novel coronavirus yesterday, taking the tally of cases to 194.

Officials said, out of 991 samples tested yesterday, three persons, who had returned from Delhi by Rajdhani Express, were found positive. So far, 175 patients have been discharged from hospital after recovery. Sikkim on Friday also reported its first case of the virus, after a UPSC-aspirant who had returned from Delhi tested positive.

Manipur has so far reported 32 cases, with a majority of the virus detections made in persons who have returned from other Indian states. India has now reported 1,38,845 cases of the coronavirus, including 77,103 active cases, 57,720 cured/discharged and 4,021 deaths.
