Guwahati: Atul Bora, the incumbent president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Atul Bora was on Thursday reelected as the president of the largest regional party in the region.

The leader, who is also the Minister of Agriculture in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Cabinet, was elected as the party's president in the 11th central general conference held at the party's headquarters in Guwahati. Bora's selection was "automatic" as no other party member had filed nomination papers. Keshab Mahanta was elected as the working president of the party.

Moments after being elected as the AGP president for the second time, Bora took to micro-blogging site Twitter to express his happiness. "I thank all the karmakartas & office holders for re-electing me as the party president in the 11th Meeting of AGP General Council. My gratitude to all. With folded hands, I promise that I shall stand by the party and every karmakarta at all times", he wrote.

Bora also expressed hope that the new brigade of the AGP shall take the regional party to newer heights. "The people of Assam shall judge how have I fared till now. But of one thing I am certain, that the alchemy of old guard & new blood bringing together all caste, creed & communities of Assam shall take AGP to newer heights", he wrote.

Addressing the media after the council, Atul Bora said that the meeting was held following complete COVID-19 protocol. Bora added that the foundation of regionalism must be strong to protect the cause of the indigenous Assamese people. Bora further said that the AGP has carried forward the legacy of the historic movement of the people of Assam fuelled by the emotion of the soil.
