Assam: Case filed against Pijush Hazarika for allegedly flouting mask-wearing rule at BTAD rally

Guwahati: A case has been filed against Assam's minister of state for health and family welfare Pijush Hazarika for allegedly flouting the COVID-19 norm of wearing masks at a rally in the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) region.

A certain Tarun Dutta has filed a complaint against the State Minister for his alleged violation of the COVID-19 code of conduct at a rally that was recently held in Tamulpur's Goibari village.

In his complaint, Dutta has accused Hazarika of not following the rule of wearing masks at a public rally that was attended by thousands of BJP supporters. He has further accused the Minister of not following the COVID-19 norm of social distancing.

The rallies in the BTAD region are being held in the lead-up to the ensuing polls in the Council, which have already been delayed due to the onset of the pandemic.

If common citizens are having to choke up hefty fines for violating the rules, why are Ministers being exempted, Dutta wrote in his complaint.

It needs mention here that the non-wearing of masks is a punishable offense in the state of Assam, with fine for one-time violators set at Rs. 500, and repeat violators set at Rs. 1,000.

The Assam Police, in recent times, has come down harshly on people who have been found violating the COVID-19 norms, and several lakh rupees have been collected as fine from violators  so far.
