Assam CM meets IIE Authorities with Aim to make Returned Migrants 'Industry Ready'

With the aim to enhance skills of the youth who have come back to Assam due to COVID-19 pandemic and make them ready for the industries, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today visited the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) in Guwahati and held a meeting with authorities.

Sonowal urged the premier institute to work in tandem with the Agriculture and Industry Departments of the State Government and stressed the need to provide market linkages to farmers and entrepreneurs to give a new thrust to the state's economy and gave directions to prepare a roadmap for providing skill development training to the youth on pisciculture, handicraft, etc. to realize the state's full potential in those sectors. Sonowal further urged the IIE authrities to to guide BDOs & Panchayats for proper implementation of Government schemes.

Making an address after the meeting, Sonowal said, "The people from Assam who were in other parts of the country for work purposes and were stranded amid the lockdown have returned. For the people who wish to re-engage in activities, the Government of Assam resolved to offer assistance. Moreover, the Industry and Skills Department of the Assam Government, Agricultur, and Veterinary, Fishery, these departments, and the panchayat and rural development etc. so that our youths can gain employment.

Sonowal clarified that the IIE, and the state Government's Department of Industries and Commerce is committed to helping these stranded people once again stand back up on their feet and assured that the returnees will be given job cards by the Government.

It is pertinent to mention here that yesterday, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the Assam government has set a seven-day deadline for providing job cards to migrant labourers who have returned from other parts of the country due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
