MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the statewide celebration of ‘Desha Bhakti’ Divas to mark the 84th death anniversary of freedom fighter, barrister of repute ‘Desha Bhakta’ Tarun Ram Phukan, Darrang district also offered floral tribute in front of the portrait of this ‘Worthy Son of Motherland’ on Friday.

In the jam-packed conference hall of the District Commissioner’s office here at 11 am, District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey began the homage paying function by lighting an earthen lamp in the traditional way and offered floral tribute. Addressing the function, District Commissioner Ngatey in his speech recalled the multi coloured personality of Tarun Ram Phukan who was a statesman with great vision. “Desha Bhakta’ though was born to a royal family, yet after completion of his Barrister at Law from London, joined the non cooperation movement of the Freedom Struggle initiated by Mahatma Gandhi and shouldered the responsibility in creating mass awareness not only in Assam, but in other parts of the country.

Tarun Ram Phukan was known for his eloquence in several languages who at the same time earned a high reputation for his hunting skills and great personality. As a good orator, he became the point of attraction in all the meetings and rallies organized as a part of freedom movement,” said District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey.

President of Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce Mukul Chandra Deka also offered homage in the function. Addressing the ‘Desha Bhakti’ as a guest speaker, media person Bhargab Kumar Das in his speech highlighted the need of study of the life and works of this legendary freedom fighter who was also the president of Axam Xahitya Xabha. “The State government of Assam under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma deserves a high appreciation for the government’s decision to celebrate this day as the ‘Desha Bhakti’ Divas and it is the high time that the younger generation should be encouraged to study the great and illustrious personality of Tarun Ram Phukan,” he said while offering his homage.

Additional Deputy Commissioners Nabadip Changmai and Gopal Krishna Sarma, Additional Superintendent of Police Pranjal Borah, journalist Mayukh Goswami, Lakkhi Nandan Kalita and Homen Kakati, SDM & HO Dr Priti Rekha Saikia and a good numbers of senior citizens and officials also attended the function anchored by DIPRO Sameer Shandilya.

BILASIPARA: Under the aegis of Bilasipara Civil administration, in collaboration with SDIPRO office, Bilasipara Desh Bhakti Diwas was observed on Friday in the premises of Dr. BR Ambedkar Bhawan, Bilasipara with a day long programme with Monuranjan Payeng, ADC cum incharge SDO (Civil), Bilasipara in the chair. In this connection the SDO (Civil) lit the ceremonial lamp. The chief guest prof Lakhimi Hazarika delivered lecture on the life and activities of great freedom fighter and patriot Tarun Ram Phukan. Being invited as distinguished guest, senior journalist Dayal Paul and Bappy Dey of Sapatgram also addressed the meeting. Senior journalist Sanjay Sarma offered vote of thanks. The meeting ended with presidential speech.
