Assam: Former MP Santiuse Kujur holds family prayer for well-being of Health Minister Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping across the world, the family of former Rajya Sabha MP Santiuse Kujur has been seen offering prayers for the well-being of "hero", Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

On Friday. Kujur's family got together for a unique prayer service. Uploading pictures from the ceremony onto Twitter, the former MP wrote, "Today we had a special family prayer for our Hero HBS, for his long life, Good health and all power to serve the needy people of Assam. God bless you sir." Sarma, after coming across the pictures on social media, thanked his "brother", Kujur, for praying for his well-being.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister has been at the forefront of the state's battle against the deadly coronavirus. In the initial days of the outbreak, when Assam was yet to be touched by the virus, Sarma was seem taking the initiative to ensure that the state Government was well prepared to deal with the crisis.

Now, although the virus has crossed the 1,000 case mark in Assam, Sarma remains confident that health facilities are adequate to treat these patients.  "Today we have 800 patients and nobody is in panic because we have the capacity and we are in a position to treat them. We have conservatively kept ready 5,000 beds. Out of that, 500-600 will be dedicated for symptomatic patients. Otherwise also, we will be able to comfortably treat 5,000 patients spreading across Assam", Sarma told the media yesterday.

Although Assam has so far reported 1,057 positive cases, around 98% of these have been detected in returnees who have been kept in institutional quarantine as per protocol. There are 925 active patients in the state who are receiving treatment for the respiratory illness.
