Guwahat: The Government of Assam has issued a formal statement clarifying the status of the proposed multipurpose hydroelectric-cum-irrigation project at Ukiam on the Kulsi River, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Kamrup district. The project, which has triggered unease among local communities, civil society organizations, and environmental groups, is feared to potentially lead to ecological disruption, displacement of residents, and harm to agriculture-dependent livelihoods in the region.

The Assam government stated that no final decision has been taken yet regarding the execution of the project. The government emphasized that the jurisdictional status of the proposed site remains under discussion with the Government of Meghalaya. “Both states will engage in structured consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including local community representatives, before taking any concrete steps,” the official statement read.

The clarification comes amidst mounting pressure from activists and residents demanding a halt to large infrastructure projects that could threaten fragile ecosystems and disrupt socio-economic stability. The government assured that any future decisions regarding the Kulsi project will prioritize the interests and well-being of the local population and will strictly adhere to principles of environmental sustainability and community participation.

Several environmental groups have welcomed the clarification but have urged both state governments to release detailed environmental impact assessments and conduct open public hearings before proceeding further. The proposed project site lies in an ecologically sensitive zone that also holds cultural and economic significance for tribal and farming communities on both sides of the Assam-Meghalaya border.
