Guwahati: Assam's finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the state's health department has successfully completed conducting 25 lakh tests.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "And we completed 25 lacs test in our fight against #COVIDー19. Tests per million are now 72987."

Alongside the rising number of tests, the number of coronavirus patients in Assam is also on the rise. The number of "serious" or "critical" patients who require oxygen is also on the rise.

Assam reported 1,537 new COVID- 19 cases on Sunday, pushing the tally to 1,25,459, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Eight more patients died in the state, following which the death toll rose to 360, he said.

A total of 1,763 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, outnumbering the new cases, which was recorded after a gap of nine days.

In another significant development, India overtook Brazil on Monday to now become the country with the second-largest number of people infected with the novel coronavirus. The country's caseload now stands at 41.13 lakh. In comparison, Brazil, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organisation, has so far reported 40.41 lakh infections.

Meanwhile, about 32.5 lakh Covid-19 patients in the country have recovered so far, and over 69,000 recoveries were recorded in the last 24 hours. Across the country, 71,642 deaths linked to the Covid-19 have been registered since the beginning of the pandemic, while 1,016 deaths have been recorded since yesterday.
