Guwahati: Amid the rising cases of Covid-19 in Assam, the Government has decided to revise the curfew timings in the state -- from 7 pm in the evening to 7 am in the morning. The new timings will be in effect from Friday, June 26.

At the same time, a complete lockdown has been announced in Guwahati, where no shops barring pharmacies will be allowed to open for an initial 7 day period when the Government will review the situation and see if there is any need to ease the restrictions.

Assam Health Minister Biswa Sarma has said that the Government will continue to enforce lockdown in the town areas even after the initial 14-day lockdown period has elapsed. The Minister further informed that this will continue until the end of the pandemic.

The Government's decision to announce yet another lockdown is in contradiction to the Centre's new policy of unlocking the country in phases after the extended lockdown period. The Assam, Government, in its attempt to flatten the COVID curve in the largest urban area in the state, Guwahati, has decided to enforce the most stringent phase of lockdown yet. Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna has announced a list of prohibitions and exemptions that will come into effect from 7 pm of June 28 to 6 pm to July 28.

Assam has registered 6,646 cases of the virus, out of which 2,601 cases are active. So far, 9 people have died due to virus-related complications.
